Navigating Social Media Flame Wars

Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky app icons on a red background.

Flame wars erupt when a social networking platform sees a resurgence in new users and activity.

Why the anxiety, anger, and aggression towards other networks? Why the detestation, hostility, and querulous attitude?

A lot of wasted energy!

I cannot see any immediate cessation of hostilities, sadly. The internet will continue to internet!

Whether you prefer Mastodon, Bluesky or Threads, be where you feel valuable and get value from. Learn to enjoy the good things you value, and let others enjoy what is valuable to them.

Free your mind from the state of other networks that don’t conform to your ideals of a social networking platform.

🧘🏿‍♂️ Avoid the unnecessary stress and look after your mental health.

I wrote my thoughts about the state of social networking platforms in this new world, which remains unchanged:

What do I currently think?
I have been on Mastodon for more than six months and Bluesky for a little over a month. I genuinely like both networks and have no ill wish to see either fail or become obscure.

My focus and interest lie in observing and learning about the stages of building these networks from conceptualising, designing, deploying, harnessing and maintaining growth.

Heading into the new world of social media decentralisation, I have no interest in making predictions neither for relevance nor notoriety about the future of these platforms – I could not give a damn about ‘I was right’.

Whatever is written in the stars for the respective networks, I hope the fortunes are good – because we all win when there are multiple successful social media platforms on the open web to suit the needs of the many.

As we go through separation anxiety (Thanks, Twitter), we should all seek a place we feel welcomed, respected, valued, protected and safe.
